Antique 1800's Original Wooden Lacquer Snuff Tobacco Box with Benjamin West Metal. 19th Century English Black Lacquered Round Snuff Box or Tobacco Box The central roundel Metal depicting the profile of a Draped bust of Benjamin West, bare head left and inscribed (Benjamin West President of the Royal Academy MDCCCXV). Approximate Dimensions: Box 90 mm, Metal 40 mm.
The top cover and interior is in good condition there is a very small nip or chip on the exterior bottom rim of cover (See Pictures) Bottom of box is in good condition. This is quite rare in this material and age.
We'd place it early to mid-1800s owing to the form, style and metal. A gorgeous depiction relief of Benjamin West metal in a gold ring type setting. The box is very good to excellent for age and type, as noted above. The Metal is in very good condition as well. Benjamin West, PRA (October 10, 1738 - March 11, 1820) was a British-American artist who painted famous historical scenes such as The Death of Nelson, The Death of General Wolfe, the Treaty of Paris, and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky. Entirely self-taught, West soon gained valuable patronage and toured Europe, eventually settling in London.He impressed King George III and was largely responsible for the launch of the Royal Academy, of which he became the second president (after Sir Joshua Reynolds). He was appointed historical painter to the court and Surveyor of the King's Pictures. West also painted religious subjects, as in his huge work The Preservation of St Paul after a Shipwreck at Malta, at the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul in Greenwich, and Christ Healing the Sick, presented to the National Gallery. West was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in a house that is now in the borough of Swarthmore on the campus of Swarthmore College, as the tenth child of an innkeeper and his wife.
