Magnificent antique Chinese hand painted lacquer wooden writing box. The tapered wooden box is hand painted with figural.

Busy scenes with houses, trees and floral motifs surrounding the figures. The painting covers the top, on four sides and on the inside.

The box was bought in England in the 1800s. A relative's parent owned this since the 1800s. Condition on the outside is not optimistic. The artwork on the top and the front have faded.

The sides and the back are in better condition. Lacquer flaking and loss of lacquer in places. However, is in a wonderful condition. The artwork on the inside cover, the two oblong covers are all in great condition.

The tray inside can be lifted revealing a storage space inside. There would have been partitions in the. But they are long gone. The large box used to have a base. There are grooves on the bottom of the box for the purpose.

This is a large and heavy box. Condition is as described and as shown in the pictures. If you have restoration skill this will be a real stunning piece. In addition, it is very rare. Because of the condition, weight and size of the box, return will not be accepted unless a professional packing company is hired. Should you need more photographs please let me know. Measurement: 43 cm (L) x 63 cm (W) x 13 cm (H). In all antiques it is inevitably that some imperfections are hard to detect. The photographs form part of the description.

The battery is there for size comparison only. It has nothing to do with the item. Most of my collection is one of a kind. I bought the items because I liked it for myself. They were never intended to be resold.

Each item has a story and when possible, I hand carried them in my luggage from all over the world to bring back to Australia. Some of the items have travelled a long way away and some of the items has been with me for more than 50 years.
